Brian and I decided to get some of the foods from the Food List Challenge before I left New York and he went to Tanzania for the summer. After some searching on Yelp, we were able to locate several of the foods we had yet to try.
We began by getting some haggis at a pub called St. Andrews. It was quite tasty and tasted a lot like lamb. Unfortunately it was not served in the stomach casing in which it was cooked. We got a couple Wee Heavy ales to go along with our Scottish food.
The second stop was The Australian. Here we got some kangaroo skewers. The ‘roo meat tasted a lot like steak, it was good but not as surprising a flavor as we expected. We also ordered some nachos which were served with a sweet mango salsa. After our main course, we finished off with some pavlova for dessert. This was a good dish, it has a very tart passion fruit sauce on the bottom, some crusted-over meringue, whipped cream, and slices of fruit.
The final venue on our journey was supposed to be a small Ukranian restaurant in a basement, but when we got there we saw a sign saying they were closed for the summer. We walked around the block and were able to find another Ukranian restaurant that had the food we were looking for: borscht. The borscht was delicious. It tasted like the beets it was made with, and was great with a bit of sour cream added. We also got some herring in white wine sauce, salad, bread, and a combo platter containing pierogies, sauerkraut, and stuffed cabbage. Overall a very good meal, and definitely the best bang-for-the-buck of our trip.
It was a successful trip overall. We knocked 4 items off of our list (haggis, kangaroo, pavlova, borscht) and ate some delicious food.
I think you’re forgetting something. Remember the phaal curry we had?
Ah, the phaal. Quite spicy, but that was on a different day – the day we met with Aaron for lunch and then saw a movie after going to McSorley’s and the Brick Lane Curry House.
We did walk by the phaal place on this day, though, when we were looking for Streecha’s Ukrainian Kitchen or whatever it was called which was closed.
What else did we hit up that day? I seem to recall we started elsewhere, since we had already eaten by the time we got to the curry house.
We had the sushi with Aaron, and then we had cheese and crackers at McSorley’s with our beer. I don’t think we ate anything else before the curry.
